    Eat What Your Grandparents Ate

Our ancestors lived long and healthy lives by cultivating traditional crops without chemicals and consuming nourishing forest roots, a practice many now wish to revive.

Responds to — loss of traditional foodways and health decline

    Eat What Your Grandparents Ate
We remember a time when our grandfathers and great-grandfathers lived for a very long time, some even to 100 years. Their bodies were pure, and their health was strong. They consumed traditional crops like Kangu, Kueri, and Kusala millets, along with ragi, kodo, and urad dal. They also ate nourishing forest-grown roots and cultivated vegetables without any fertilizer, relying on the land's natural bounty. These practices kept them well. Even when they faced illness, they had powerful traditional remedies, like 'hada pahada' or 'anga sher,' which could bring healing. Now, many of us find ourselves in a difficult state, and even modern hospitals sometimes can't help us get well. We see a decline in health and well-being as we've moved away from these ancestral ways. We truly wish to live like our ancestors again, cultivating our food without chemicals and embracing the diet that brought them such good health and longevity. We believe reviving these traditional crops and farming methods is key to a healthier future for our community.

    The recipe

Reintroduce traditional millets and crops, cultivate without chemical fertilizers, and embrace forest-grown foods for health and longevity.

All the people of Kundamala district. Finally, our forefathers used to make a very good medicine. If someone had a headache, they would cook something like Shiva's mud and drink a little, and they would get better. Even if there were other ailments or axe wounds, our herbal medicine would make them better. And the leaves and roots of these plants are all cut and eaten.

Lako Block, Mona Chatrabana Malliku, Talaguda Dipti, Baliguda Block, Kandhamal District. Earlier, in ancient times, I used to play Bohera game, Bati game, even Pilo game. Now, these games are not played. Those old games are not there anymore. Cricket, cricket games, and football are going on now.

Name Nirupama Nayak, Village Panganaju, Panchayat Gumamaha, Block Raikia. May the traditions and customs of the village, as they were before, be revived.

Listen, concerning this song, as a second preference, it should be done this way: by establishing a temple using traditional worship methods, and then install.

Grama Sasimaha, Gram Panchayat Jhiradikia, Block Kannaga, District Kandhamal. We want to see a developed India by 2047. In our village, there are many problems with roads and transportation. The water supply is not functioning properly. Also, the condition of the school's boundary, playground, and houses is not good. Therefore, we request the government to take immediate action on our problems so that we, the villagers, will be benefited.

We believe that the traditional crops like ragi, kodo, and urad dal, which were produced by our farmers in the past, should be produced again. For that, we are requesting the Chief Minister or the Prime Minister.

My name is Sukanta Pradhan. Village Sasibaha. Gram Panchayat Dridikia. Block Kunuaga. District Kandhamal. I am a farmer. But because we don't have financial resources, we are unable to farm properly. We have a strong desire to start a poultry and goat farm. If we were given 20,000 rupees through the government, we would be benefited.

In the past, our bodies were pure, and that's why we used to live. That 'hada pahada' (traditional remedy derived from strong, natural sources), even if it was fragile like glass, it could sprout (i.e., have an effect). If that ground powder was consumed, it protected us. We used to get well from it. And if there was fever or illness, that was a big problem. Even if we got the smallest particle of 'anga sher' by grinding it, we used to get well. Now, having abandoned that, even by going to the hospital, we are unable to get well. Gradually, it (life/health) will decline.

My name is Leena Pradhan Raykia, Kandhamal. What about good education, health, and unemployment? By eliminating it, every village should become an ideal village by 2047.

I remember the olden days. Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers used to consume Kangu, Kueri, Kusala (types of millets). Because they consumed these, they lived for a very long time, up to 100 years. Presently, since these are not being consumed, all of us are in a difficult state. If the government would provide us with seeds of Kangu and Kueri, it would be even better. We would thank the government. Namaskar to everyone.
