Raise a Calf, Secure Your Children's Future

Families in Balangir are leveraging modest funds to invest in livestock like cows and goats, creating a sustainable source of income to support their households and educate their children.

    By Parikshit Majhi · Balangir

Responds to — Limited income, financial instability, rural poverty

Raise a Calf, Secure Your Children's Future
When I get money, my first thought is to buy a cow. I envision the cow having a calf, watching it grow big, and then selling it. This simple cycle helps me support my family and ensure my children can go to school. It’s a steady way to build our future, one calf at a time. And it's not just cows. If our Self-Help Group receives funds, we plan to take a loan for goats. Engaging in the goat business allows us to expand our group, bringing more women into our collective effort. It's about growing together and finding new ways to earn. These small steps, whether it's a cow or a goat, give us a path forward. They provide not just income today, but a sense of security and hope for what we can achieve for our families tomorrow.

    The recipe

Invest in small livestock such as cows or goats to generate income through selling offspring, supporting family needs and children's education.

Government, please confirm with your people. Provide food and local forest food for the people under the PDS mid-day meal scheme. If it is provided from your side, the people will be able to sell it.

If we get 20 rupees from Puriad drop, we can earn. If we can bring 10 items, all our family members can live well. What if our clothes also sell well?

If our SHG group receives ₹20,000, we will all collectively make 12 oil cake items. The name is automatic.

When I get money, I will buy a cow. The cow will have a calf, the calf will grow big, and I will sell the grown calf. With that, I will support my family and children.

For the midday meal, some 'maudia' (puffed rice snacks) and other light items should be provided. In addition to that, various greens found from the forest, such as drumstick leaves and 'kule' (another type of edible green), should also be given.

It would be beneficial if forest fruits, roots, Char, Dumer, and Kuddu fruits are given to school children as part of the midday meals provided in schools. Whatever term applies.
