Cultivate Your Land for Future Living

By integrating diverse farming practices with deep knowledge of local forest foods, we ensure our community's sustenance and future well-being.

By Laxmi Bagh, Farmer · SUBDEGA

Responds to — Food scarcity and livelihood insecurity

Cultivate Your Land for Future Living
For us, living means connecting deeply with the land and its gifts. I focus on cultivating paddy, and alongside, I plant trees. In our pond, I also practice fish farming. This diversified approach is how I plan for our future here. We know the forest provides, too, with fruits and roots like Kendu, Char, Mahua, and Amla, and plants like Makonamanji, Lau, Janhi, and Sembimanji that grow by themselves. Why chase market business when we can grow our own leafy greens and vegetables?

    The recipe

Integrate paddy cultivation with tree planting and fish farming, supplemented by foraging for local forest foods and growing self-sufficient vegetables.

The things found in the forest are fruits and roots, such as Kendu, Char, Mahua, and Amla.

I will earn 100 rupees by farming, save it for next year, and then I will earn 100 rupees again.

Even if I'm not a small person, I took a small house; and if I am a small person, I took it. Even though we didn't have a house here. This was neither our companion nor truly ours. They gave us our place, they gave us our place.

Our tribe is different from others because our language, culture, and traditions are very different from theirs. Our food habits and livelihood are very different from theirs. That is why we are different.

Oh, today, today. Sometimes like a wrestler, sometimes we would just eat brass gourd greens. What will we eat today? For these past seven days, the kitchen has been frightening.

If you give 20 thousand rupees, then I will tell you. Why would I tell you? If you give 20 thousand rupees, why are you doing market business instead of growing leafy greens and vegetables?

I will cultivate paddy. Along with paddy cultivation, I will also plant trees on the sides. Then, I will do fish farming in the pond, and for living here in the future.
