Nourish Futures with Our Native Grains

To preserve our health and culture, we advocate for the inclusion of native, nutritious grains in public food programs.

    By Rupesh Maravi · MANDLA

Responds to — Loss of traditional food culture, nutritional gaps, fading cultural identity

Nourish Futures with Our Native Grains
Our Adivasi Gond community are worshippers of nature, and our ancient practices and traditions, though unwritten, emotionally connect society and foster its well-being. Yet, with modernity, our younger generation is forgetting their food habits and cultural values, including our traditional songs, music, and attire. This erosion deeply concerns us. We know the power of our traditional nutritious foods like kodo, kutki, maize, sorghum, and various dals. These grains are easily available in our region and are fundamental to our health and identity. We firmly believe they should be a central part of our diet, especially for our children. That's why we advocate for their promotion and inclusion in government programs like PDS and mid-day meals, served as khichdi and dalia. This isn't just about providing food; it's about revitalizing our culture, ensuring proper nutrition, and strengthening our community's future.

Our traditional songs, music, and games like Karma, Dadariya, Shaila, Reena are not seen or heard in today's new era, and these are the very identity of our culture. It is necessary to take initiative to bring them back into prevalence.

Conservative traditions hold special importance in the daily practices and relationships of our Adivasi Gond community, emotionally connecting society and fostering its well-being.

We, the people of the Adivasi Guna community, are worshippers of nature. Our customs, ancient practices, traditions, and culture are unwritten.

The government should promote the most nutritious foods easily available in our region, such as kodo, kutki, maize, along with tur dal, gram, and horse gram lentils, and include them in PDS and mid-day meals.

Tribals are the pride of the country. Many schemes are made daily for the welfare of our society, but what can I say, nothing really comes of them. Only God knows when things will truly change. Now, they are calling the village 'Bhagwahi'.

    📜

Our culture, our spoken language, our customs, our attire, and traditions are fading away with time. Therefore, we all stand together in the campaign to save them, which the Gram Shakti organization has started.

    🌾

Our traditional nutritious food like kodo, kutki, maize, sorghum, wheat, etc., as khichdi and dalia should be given in mid-day meals, and it would be great if the government also includes such grains in PDS.

What should I do, what should I do, what should I do? I have arrived here, I will take and I will eat. If it gets well, then get the correct injection. What will I do? I could not go to work/a place. Yes, the soul is present. How does this work?

    — Rupesh Maravi

    🌾

Our native little millet, kodo, maize, sorghum, arhar, urad, kulthi, moong, and soybean should also be included in the government's ration card and in our school's midday meal.

What will I do? What will I do? I have reached here, I will take and eat. If there is a health issue, get the right injection. What will I do? I couldn't go anywhere. Yes, the soul resides.

If I get 20000, I will do something for the children.

Today's younger generation is not easily embracing the values of our culture. In the storm of modernity, they are forgetting their food habits, attire, traditions, and more.
