What people in Barnala are saying

13 neighbours have shared what matters to them — in their own words.

“Ajitpal Singh | 18 yrs old. The most popular varieties here are Safeeda, Kesri and Chusa. Of course, many more are available, but these are the ones we get the most during the season. The quality was good this year and the taste was also great. This year the prices are a little higher but in wholesale markets it is pretty reasonable.”

What the community is telling us🌧️ Strained

Nearby, the main topics are dominated by concerns over the extreme summer heat 🌡️, which is causing widespread discomfort, health issues like heat strokes, and impacting animals, leading to heavy reliance on air conditioning. Another significant issue revolves around the quality and safety of mangoes 🥭, with many residents reporting problems from chemically grown produce and advocating for organic sources. Furthermore, rising fuel and commodity prices 💰 are directly affecting household budgets and significantly increasing farming costs for essentials like fertilizers and transportation, despite government provisions for LPG. On a positive note, citizens are demonstrating community resilience through proactive health measures such as increased water intake, using cooling cloths, adjusting schedules, and incorporating hydrating foods and drinks. Some also noted that increased rain provides temporary respite from the heat, and households are adapting to rising costs by increasing electrical stove usage and focusing on saving.

    What could help
💧Launch a comprehensive public health campaign to educate citizens on effective strategies for managing extreme heat, focusing on hydration, heatstroke prevention, and safe cooling practices.
🥭Strengthen regulatory oversight and implement public awareness initiatives to address the prevalence of chemically treated produce, particularly mangoes, promoting food safety and supporting local organic farming.
🌾Evaluate and implement targeted support mechanisms, such as subsidies or price stabilization programs, for the agricultural sector to alleviate the burden of rising fuel and input costs on farming communities.

“Ajitpal Singh | 18 yrs. This summer was very hot, although, it is also accompanied by more rain than usual. The problem was that after the rain it would immediately return to the same level of heat. Because of extreme heat during afternoon, I avoid going out. My coaching time has also changed to evening. I wear a cold water soaked cloth will travelling on my two wheeler. At home, we are heavily dependent on AC. Other than that, my water and liquid intake has increased.”

    🥭 ⭐ 🧐

“Balwinder Kaur | 46 yrs old. I think Safeeda and Chausa are the very popular here. I personally also like Totapuri too. Ramkela is also famous because we use it in pickle making. The quality is usually good and this year too it was fine but that depends on where you are buying it from. Some places have better quality than the others.”

“Palwinder Singh | 45 yrs I am a Vet, and I have noticed that this year heat has been particularly hard on animals and birds. I have seen many cases of animals suffering health issues because of this. I too feel very uncomfortable while working in so much heat. At home and in car because of Air conditioning it is fine but otherwise the weather is harsh enough to avoid leaving home. I drink as much water as possible to avoid fainting and avoid going in direct sunlight wihout protective cover. ”

“Prabhjot Kaur | 22 yrs The heat is unbearable this summer. I use sunscreen everytime I get out and cover my head. The AC is on for most of the time. I sometimes carry a small hand fan too. I carry a water bottle with me. I have also started to include one drink like lemonade with every meal.”

“Palwinder Singh | 46 yrs old We are lucky to not experience any immediate effects of the gas shortage as LPG is for household use is made available by the government. Although, there is a price hike of around 60 rupees per cylinder. For us the more direct problem is the increasing fuel prices. This has raised the prices for most of the everyday amenities. There is nothing special we are doing to deal with this other than saving where we can and when we can.”

“Prabhjot Kaur | 22 yrs old. Safeeda, Langra, Chausa are very famous varieties here in our area. We also get Alphonso which I like, but it is more expensive than other varieties. The quality is good but only if you buy from verified organic sources otherwise most of the market is flooded with chemically grown mangoes. This year I got throat problem because of this. Since then, I check if it is organically grown or not.”

“Balwinder Kaur | 46 yrs The heat is very harsh this summer. I work as the health supervisor and there is an increase in heat strokes. Many people have started to take ORS as a preventive measure as well. I try to drink as much water as possible to deal with the heat. I also use a cold cloth to cool down sometimes. Other than that AC usage is very high for us. How ever rain sometimes provide respite from the heat.”

“Baldev Singh Bajwa | 70 yrs old. Most popular mango varieties, I feel like would beDashehari, Langra, Safeeda, and Badami. Although, I don't think there is clear knowledge of which one is the most liked,. This year the quality was okay. The mangoes arrived a bit later than last year. The chemical use is similar to previoius years., so we have made peace with that. Some mangoes are good but they are not as sweet as they used to be. ”

    🥭 🧪 🤢

“Palwinder Singh | 45 yrs old We get most varieties here, most of these are exported from U.P. The ones that I can remember are Saheeda, Chusa, Alphonso, Langde, Badami, Dussheri, and Keshri. These are very readily avalaible and easy to store. This year I feel like the quality was mixed. Some of the batches were good, while some were heavily infused with chemicals and tasted bland. ”

“Baldev Singh | 70 yrs The increasing fuel prices are directly effecting farming in our area. The prices of fertilisers, insecticides and other stuff used in farming have increased substantially. Moreover, the price of transportation has also increased. This is causing great problems for the community which is largly dependent on farming. The LPG cylinder rates have also hiked. There is no help from the government.”

“Baldev Singh | 70 yrs I don't go out a lot so the heat is not as bad for me as it is for people who work out. At home, I think the usage of AC is more than usual. The rain is good this year so that's one good thing. Iced lemon juice is my favourite way to deal with this heat. Fruits like watermelon also help.”

“Balwinder Kaur | 46 yrs Though the LPG crisis is not that harsh on us, we have still increased the usage of electrical stove. The prices of vegetables and fruits have increased. Not just this but the prices of all basic stuff has increased. The only thing we are focusing on is saving and reducing our energy intake.”
